Personally, I've always tried to find the best quality equipment that I could afford through the many years that I've played ice hockey. I have found that it is better to pay a little more for equipment that will last more than a season or two (unless you're not sure you want to settle in the game), than spending more and more on equipment that won't last or be as protective.
If you plan on playing hockey for the short term, equipment manufactured in the Far East might be considered as it is less expensive than their "pro" level equivalent, (usually produced in Canada and Scandinavia). On the other hand, the equipment made in the Far East provides a little less protection, quality and durability. Getting quality gear will pay for itself in the long term.
Canada and Scandinavia are steeped in the sport of hockey and produce better quality equipment, although at a higher price for the value.
Major Brands are RBK (Reebok), Bauer, Mission, Itech, CCM, Easton, Jofa, Koho and Vaughn (just for goalies). Observe what the Pros are wearing. Even though they are subsidized by the manufacturers, they also have to endure a long season to make their livelihood.
These companies have a range of equipment that covers the spectrum from the novice to the professional. Keep in mind that these companies pro level equipment are usually manufactured in Canada or Scandinavia, with levels below (senior, intermediate and junior) being made in the Far East.
When choosing the equipment, it is a good idea to try the gear on at a local shop for fit and protection. For instance, when trying on goalie pads bring your skates and goalie pants, to make sure that the pads will integrate with the rest of your gear.
If you find deals locally go for it, as it may be better supported than buying online.
Keep in mind that there are a lot of online deals and closeouts as well.
It is ultimately your choice. Wherever you go, just go educated.
